Bicester Soaring Group operates from the magnificent Bicester airfield: a well known and very large grass airfield that is shared with different aviation activities: powered aircraft, aeromodellers and paramotors. The group was set up as an experiment in 2019 and offers a quite different type of soaring organization. The group is not a training club and instead offers a custom launching operation for private owners. We operate 7 days a week and members can get a launch on demand just using Whatsapp to call up a tuggie. The long runways and powerful Pawnee tug allow us to easily launch fully ballasted gliders (increasingly rare in the South of England) and there are Ikarus and Super Cub back up tugs as insurance. The group enjoys a good relationship with the wider Bicester Airfield activities.
There is no duty roster or requirement to help maintain the airfield as that is handled by the airfield owner. We simply water up at the taps, tow out and go. Debriefs are outside the clubroom over beers. Our Pawnee lives in one of the huge hangars which are also occasionally available for gliders. The group is very keen to co-exist with local clubs and are able to welcome those needing to land for an aerotow retrieve. There is a free “come and try” day membership for anyone wanting to come investigate what is on offer. We welcome like minded people wanting to join us.
Flying is organized on our WhatsApp group and with some top pilots on site we share weather forecasts and organize daily tasks and regatta start races. Local airspace is good and Bicester is in a great location for Cross Country flying.
